How to Make a Hippie Outfit Out of Tape and Cardboard

  • 1). Find a large brown paper bag big enough to fit over the upper body. Agricultural potato bags, for example, will fit an adult while an ordinary large brown paper bag from the store will fit a small child. Cut a neck hole at the top of the upside down bag. Add arm holes and cut all the way up the front to the neck hole. Fold lengths of wide brown packing tape around the edges where you have cut and around the original opening of the bag. Tape pieces of brown wool to the bottom of the vest for a fringe. Paint badges onto the front of the vest.

  • 2). Use a pencil to draw around an upside-down pudding bowl on a piece of cardboard to make a circle. Use a compass or a smaller bowl to draw a circle roughly 1 1/2-cm inside the one you already have. Inside this inner circle draw a 1 1/2-cm wide Y-shape. Use a ruler to keep the edges straight. Cut out the peace symbol you have made and spray-paint it silver. Pierce the circle above the bottom of the Y-shape with a skewer and thread 1/2-m of brown wool through the hole. Tie the wool together at the ends and you have a peace symbol necklace to wear.

  • 3). Cut a strip of 1-inch wide cardboard that is long enough to fit around your head at temple level and overlap by 1-inch at the ends. Tape the ends together and paint your counterculture headband in multiple bright colors. If you are going to wear a long wig, make sure the headband will be large enough to wear over it.

  • 4). Take a large cereal box and cut out the rectangular front and back cardboard panels. Stick the panels together around the edges with clear sticky tape. The plain sides should face outward. Depending on which way up you want to use your placard, leave a 2-inch gap free of tape at the bottom centre of the placard body. Push a ruler into this gap between the cardboard panels for about 4-inches and secure in place with more clear sticky tape. Paint peace and anti-war slogans on the front and back of your cardboard placard and carry it with you to complete your hippie outfit.
