The Best Christmas Productions in Calgary

O Hotel Suites, and anyone else who’s stuck for something to take the family out to for Christmas.

The world tour of this production of the holiday classic sold out last year, and the same cast and crew are back for another round. There’s also some additional scenery and the choreography has been revisited. What makes this a good choice for families is the story; this production has something for everyone. The Nutcracker is filled with romance, costumes and dancing, magic, and epic swordfights. It’s also one of the few productions for the holidays that doesn’t hinge on any particular religious belief or custom. Tickets can be acquired through Ticketmaster, Alberta Ballet, or the Jubilee Auditorium.

Another Holiday tradition is Handel’s Messiah. This production is being put on by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and promises to be a fantastic execution of one of the most popular Christmas traditions in the last three hundred years. This one is probably a bit more suited to older audiences, since a philharmonic orchestra doesn’t tend to have the same pull on younger audiences.

A murder mystery may not be what most people think of when they try to plan some family activities over the holidays, but it’s time for that to change. The Deane House will be the site for the Comic Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre’s production of It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like... Murder.

Trouble is brewing at the Elves Annual Christmas Gala. Due to a tragic reindeer-related accident, Santa is out of the action this year with a broken leg. The funny, yet sinister, plot follows his Elves as they become increasingly competitive in their bid to find a replacement for ‘Ol Saint Nick. Oh, and if anyone out there is mildly offended about the idea of a murder mystery that involves Santa Claus... it could be worse, it could be about Zombies. Tickets are available at www.greatfun.ca, and they include cocktails and a meal as well as the murder-ific show.
