How to Write on a Mortar Board

    • 1). Make letters out of masking tape if you want to go the traditional (and quick) route. Tear or cut strips of tape and use them to spell out your message in block or angular letters.

    • 2). Squeeze on fabric paint if you like bright colors and glitter. Craft stores sell fabric paint in squeezable, usually accordion-shaped tubes. Snip the end close to the tip for thin letters or farther down for fatter ones.

    • 3). Cut letters out of fabric and attach them to your mortar board with hot glue. To make sure the letters fit on your mortarboard and are legible, use stencils. Trace the stencils with a marker on the right side of the fabric, then cut out the letters with scissors or a craft knife. Apply small dots of hot glue all over the back of each letter and press them onto the mortarboard.

    • 4). Bend pipe cleaners into the letters of the words you wish to write. Use hot glue to attach the pipe cleaners to the mortar board.

    • 5). Use iron-on letters to write on your mortar board. Iron-on letters have glue on the back, so they adhere well to the fabric-covered board. Different letters are applied in different ways depending on what they are made of, so follow the manufacturer's instructions on the package for best results.
