How to Make an Origami Knife out of Paper

    • 1). Lay the origami paper in front of you with the colored side of the paper face up. Make the square into a triangle by pulling the right corner down to meet the left corner; creating a diagonal fold through the center of the paper.

    • 2). Unfold the paper and fold the top left corner down to the lower right corner, making another diagonal crease through the middle of the paper. Unfold the paper to reveal an X made up of creases going through the center of your paper.

    • 3). Turn the paper so that one corner points straight up and the paper looks more like a diamond than a square. Fold the right corner of your diamond in toward the center crease, aligning the lower right edge of the paper with the center crease.

    • 4). Fold in the left corner of your diamond in the same way and crease well. You now have what looks like a kite.

    • 5). Fold 1 inch of the right corner that you just folded inward, back out. Make sure that when you fold it the point meets the outer edge. Repeat with the left corner.

    • 6). Fold 1/4 inch of the right corner of your diamond inward and then unfold it. Verify that the tip of the new triangle touches the corner of the colored one when you fold it. Repeat with the left corner of the diamond.

    • 7). Turn your kite shape over and fold the 1/4 inch corners that you just creased over onto this side of the piece.

    • 8). Pull the right side of your piece toward the center line and fold it down. Fold the top point down to meet the top of this fold, slightly overlapping it.

    • 9). Fold the left side of your piece over to the center line. It should slightly overlap the top point that you just folded down.

    • 10

Fold 1/2 inch of the bottom point of your piece inward. You now have a tiny triangle that points up.

    • 11

Fold the right corner of this tiny triangle inward. Repeat with the left side.

    • 12

Grab the lower portion of your piece, which shows the uncolored paper, and fold it at a slight diagonal to the left. Unfold it and fold it the other way, making a slight diagonal to the right. Unfold to show creases that make an elongated X shape through the lower part of your piece.

    • 13

Push the right and left sides of the X shape toward each other from the bottom side of the paper. As you push these sides together, the lower portion of the knife will stick straight out, perpendicular to the top end.

    • 14

Squeeze the vertical fold that runs through the middle of the lower end so that it is tighter. Push the lower end of the knife toward the top end.

    • 15

Fold the sides of the upper portion of your piece around the lower portion. Smooth out your piece so that it lies flat. If you hold your knife by the side, you should be able to flip it open and closed with a flick of your wrist.
