The Easiest Ways to Catch Walleyes

    Minnow

    • Live minnows are effective in catching spawning walleye. A hooked minnow only is often sufficient or you can try using it along with a bucktail or similar-type jig. Too much hardware is not recommended in clear spawning waters as it can scare rather than attract the fish. Add a weight to your line to hold the bait in the water.

    Crankbait

    • Crankbaits are types of lures that, when reeled in, mimic the movement of a small bait fish. A crankbait is a viable choice for catching walleyes in rivers and lakes. Experiment with subtle, medium and aggressive crankbaits as well as the speed at which you reel it in.

    Trolling

    • Trolling is the process of pulling a line slowly through the water with a boat. In the mid-to-late summer and early autumn when walleye go deep, it is possible to catch walleye by trolling with a downrigger. A downrigger allows you to easily place the lure at a specific depth. During other seasons when the walleye are not so deep, it is possible to troll with just crankbaits. The more skittish the fish, the farther the lure should be placed from the weight. For skittish fish in shallow water, offshore side-planer boards make it easy to keep the lure down and away from the boat.

    Colored Rubber Bait

    • If using rubber bait, such as twister tails, choose the correct color for the season to ensure it will attract walleyes. Use brightly colored bait in the spring. In the spring walleyes are still in a mode of defense over their spawning grounds and will see the bright color as an aggressor, biting the bait as an attack. During the summer, use darker or more neutral colors. Spray the bait with touch of fish spray, which contains pheromones, to make it even more enticing.
