How to Select a Blue Sapphire Engagement Ring

    • 1). Consider your budget. Sapphires can be an expensive stone for an engagement ring; your budget will most likely determine what type of sapphire you can afford.

    • 2). Choose the ring you will be using for the blue sapphire. Consider both the material the ring is made of, such as gold, platinum or another metal, and the quality of the metal, such as how many karats you want the gold to be. Also consider the setting for your sapphire. The setting choice will be influenced by your choice of sapphire, but you want the gem to be secure.

    • 3). Select a color for the sapphire. While you are choosing a blue sapphire, the gem still comes in different shades. A brilliant blue sapphire will be the most expensive. Very dark blue, almost black sapphires and very light blue sapphires are less pure and therefore less expensive.

    • 4). Choose a shape for your sapphire. Note that the cut and the shape are two different things. The cut will show off the features of the sapphire. The shape refers to the literal shape of the gem. Most sapphires are in an oval shape for a ring, but you may be able to find another shape.
