How to Decorate Your House With Mexican Traditions

    • 1). Choose a color scheme. Pick several colors that you want to emphasize in your decorating such as rich browns, deep oranges or teal blue hues. Traditional Mexican decor makes extensive use of multicolored patterns, both geometric and flowered in design.

    • 2). Pick furniture pieces that have rustic textures. Leather, ornate carved wood and clay bring out a rustic feel. Oversize furniture suggests opulence and a comfortable setting. Choose sofas that have deep cushions and padded arms. Find furniture with dark stains and varied wood grains for a rich look.

    • 3). Add arrangements that include carved stone or stuffed and mounted animals. An animal skin gives a room a rustic, homelike feel, while stone-carved bowls filled with nature items suggests a more primitive feel. Incorporate these elements to create an earthy Mexican style.

    • 4). Create soft lighting. Use indirect lighting with low-level lamps or put overhead lighting on a dimmer to create a soft feel. Avoid using fluorescent light bulbs, as this can create a harsh glare on furniture and ruin the effect. Lamps made of patterned ceramic or ochre-colored clay lend to a traditional Mexican theme.

    • 5). Use bright pops of color with accessories. A rainbow-colored woven rug or throw blanket will tie together the traditionalism. Find artwork replicating Catholic religious figures such as the Virgin Mary or Saint Christopher. Let the color in your accessories brighten up the rooms instead of using physical light.

    • 6). Add some European influences. A crystal chandelier or gold-hued figurines lend shine and richness to a room. Stylized silver pieces can also create an elegant feel.
