How to Make a Knitted Single Loop Scarf
- 1). Cast on 40 stitches. To cast on, make a slipknot on one needle and pull tight. Twist the working yarn into a backward loop with the ball end of the yarn situated between the loop and the needle. Place the loop on the needle and pull the loop tightly onto the needle. Continue making backward loops until you have 40 stitches on the needle, including the slipknot.
- 2). Knit four stitches. Then, knit one, purl one across the row until you reach the last four stitches. Knit the last four stitches.
To knit, hold the yarn to the back of the work and insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle from front to back. Wrap the yarn behind and around the right needle and draw a loop through the stitch on the left needle with the tip of the right needle. Drop the stitch off the left needle.
To purl, hold the yarn to the front of the work and insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle from back to front. Wrap the yarn around and over the right needle and draw a loop through the stitch on the left needle with the tip of the right needle. Drop the stitch off the left needle. - 3). Repeat the first row one more time.
- 4). Knit four stitches. Purl one, knit one across the row until you reach the last four stitches. Knit the last four stitches.
Repeat this row one more time. - 5). Repeat these four rows until the scarf reaches about 70 inches or the length you desire.
- 6). Bind off all the stitches. To bind off, knit the first two stitches from the left needle to the right needle. Lift the first stitch over the second stitch and off the needle, using the point of the left needle. Knit another stitch from the left needle to the right needle, and lift the first stitch over the new stitch and off the needle. Continue binding off in this manner until one stitch remains on the needle. Cut the yarn, leaving a 24-inch tail, and draw the tail through the remaining loop. Pull the yarn tight to secure.
- 7). Thread the tail yarn onto a tapestry needle. Turn the bind-off edge of the scarf over one time to introduce a half-twist to the scarf. Line up the bind-off edge with the cast-on edge.
- 8). Seam the edges together using the tail yarn. Begin by inserting the needle down through the center of the first stitch of the cast-on edge and then up through the first stitch on the bind-off edge. Continue seaming in this manner until the scarf is joined into a single loop with a half twist. Weave in the loose ends.
