How to Make Chinese Lanterns for Kindergarten
- 1). Fold a piece of construction paper lengthwise.
- 2). Draw a pencil line 1 inch in from the long edge of the open side. Make certain that no child has drawn their line on the folded edge.
- 3). Demonstrate how to make cuts from the folded edge into the pencil line. Start 2 inches from one end and continue along the length of the paper until you are 2 inches from the other end. Exact precision of measurement is not necessary. Once the children see how it is accomplished, they will imitate the procedure.
- 4). Unfold the cut paper. Do not completely flatten on the fold as this crease will become the protruding middle section of the lantern.
- 5). Tape the short sides of the paper together.
- 6). Cut a strip of paper 1/2 inch wide by 6 inches long.
- 7). Tape this to one circular end on opposite sides of the lantern top; this will create a handle for hanging.
- 1). Take a piece of construction paper and draw a simple repeating pattern on one long edge. A simple zigzag line or a variation of such will be sufficient.
- 2). Cut this design off of the paper leaving one decorated long edge on the paper.
- 3). Draw various simple, small shapes on the body of the paper.
- 4). Instruct and demonstrate cutting these shapes. Do not cut them completely out of the paper. Leave enough of each shape attached to the base paper so that they may be folded out and still remain attached to the construction paper.
- 5). Fold all the shapes out and crease the folds so that they remain open.
- 6). Tape the short edges of the paper together to form a cylinder.
- 7). Cut a 1/2 inch by 6 inch handle and attach to the top.
