How Does an iPod Video Work?

    iPod Video Pedigree

    • The iPod Video, designed by Apple, is a vastly popular consumer electronics device that has been around since 2005, and is an entry into the digital video player field of electronics that play back mp3 files -- files of high quality and relatively small size that can be listened to on the go. The iPod Video is based upon the original iPod's basic design and subsequent generational releases, with the largest added benefit of being able to play back full-color video on its screen. Since the introduction of models such as the iPod Nano and iPod Touch, the iPod Video is now referred to as the iPod Classic.

    Hard Drive and Screen

    • The iPod Video features a 2.5-inch screen and a large hard drive for the storage of mp3 music files. The hard drive capacity of 120GB is good for holding a variety of music, video and photo files. The 120GB hard drive can store approximately 30,000 songs, 150 hours of video or 25,000 photos. To transfer files, users need only hook up the iPod Video with the provided USB 2.0-based cable to their PC or Mac and launch iTunes. Music, videos and photos will be shared and updated between the two devices. With iTunes one can legally purchase music, television shows and more, with music downloads costing 99 cents a song. The option exists to buy full albums. It should be noted, however, that iTunes isn't the only method to obtain music and video, but it is the preferred legal route.

    Headphones and Listening

    • Audio output is achieved through the included set of Apple white earbuds. These plug into a headphone jack located on the device. However, there are many other first-party and third-party headphones available for the product. In-ear devices exist from Apple and other manufacturers that will improve listening quality, but only at a premium price.

    Scroll Wheel

    • The iPod Video relies on the tried-and-true method of navigation pioneered by later-generation iPod Classic devices and still utilized by the iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle. The iPod Video features a touch-sensitive yet click-able scroll wheel. The wheel is circular shaped, and scrolling up and down through various menu options is achieved by simply rotating the finger or thumb either clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on the direction one wishes to scroll. This is achieved through touch-sensitive technology. It should be noted that the screen itself is not touch sensitive. The scroll wheel also features click-able buttons that allow for the selection of a track to play or pause, forward or reverse tracking buttons to cycle through sequential songs, and a menu button.
