How to Protect a Jailbroken iPhone

    • 1). Set your iPhone to sync with iTunes manually to avoid inadvertently updating its operating system or carrier software, which undoes its jailbreak and relocks it to AT&T. Jailbreak software is tied to the iPhone's operating system and carrier software -- which together comprise the device's "firmware" -- and updating either causes incompatibility.

    • 2). Take extra care to protect your jailbroken iPhone from physical damage, keeping in mind that jailbreaking the device voids its warranty, necessitating you pay for repairs out of pocket. In particular, avoid dropping your iPhone or exposing it to water or excess humidity, two damages which often require expensive screen and hard drive replacements.

    • 3). Keep the jailbroken iPhone on your person at all times to prevent someone from stealing it. As they can be used with any network's SIM card, jailbroken iPhones are a great find for someone dishonest who intends to keep it -- he doesn't have to do any extra work to use the device as if it's his own.

    • 4). Be prudent when downloading applications from "Cydia," a third-party application store commonly installed alongside a jailbreak. Cydia sells and offers applications that aren't authorized by Apple, some of which may contain malicious software or generally slow down the operation of your iPhone.
