How to Store and Read Documents on an iPhone
- 1
Download the Good Reader App from the Apple App Store. As of this writing, Good Reader costs $4.99. - 2
Tap on the Good Reader app to open it once it's installed. When you first open Good Reader you'll see that it is empty. The next steps of the process are going to be uploading documents to the reader and then how to read them. - 3
Tap the icon on the lower left of the Good Reader screen that looks like a computer and an iPhone. This opens up a page with a url for your iPhone. While you're uploading the documents you must leave the phone on this page or the connection will be broken. Good Reader will block the auto-locking feature of the iPhone while on this page.
*Note: Your phone and computer must be on the same network for this to work. - 4
UPLOADING A DOCUMENT OPTION 1: The first option you have for uploading documents is through your Internet browser. Open up the browser of your choice and enter the url. This will open a webpage. Click "Browse" to choose your file and then click "Upload selected file" when ready. As easy as this is, there are some big disadvantages to using this method. You can only upload one file at a time and it's a lot slower for large files. - 5
UPLOADING A DOCUMENT OPTION 2: The other option to upload documents is by making the phone a "Network Place" on your PC. This allows you to transfer multiple documents at once just like you would to any hard drive. This article shows you how to do it in Windows XP, but you can also do this on a Mac. On your PC click My Network Places > Add a network place > Next > Choose Another Network Location > Next > Enter the url for the iPhone > Next > Enter a Name > Next > Finish.
*Note: You may get a message on your iPhone asking if you want to allow the connection. Be sure to hit "Yes." - 6
Drag your documents from your PC to the window and it will copy them to your iPhone. You can also create directories. You can copy a wide variety of files including txt, pdf, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, HTML, iWork and some audio and video files. - 7
Click "stop" on your iPhone to go back to the main Good Reader page once you are done uploading. You will see the documents that you uploaded. Click on one to open it and start reading. - 8
Scroll with your fingers or just tap the top and bottom of the screen to go to the next and previous pages. You can also use the slide bar to zoom ahead in txt files.
With PDF files you can zoom in or out by pinching. The icon on the lower right will allow you to flip the view between horizontal or vertical.
Hitting the "gear" will allow you to access controls to change font, font color and background color for txt files. When you exit the reader it will remember exactly where you left off in your book, but if you like, the book mark icon will allow you to bookmark your spot.
Happy reading!
