Fly fishing, trolling, bait fishing, and still fishing are all effective. Bait fishing is the most common method and is also the most effective. Spinner or crank baits are the best if you want to catch bass or pike. Many other anglers prefer using the plastic worms along with a slip sinker.
- Trolling is best in the spring and fall and to catch trout and salmon. The best lures to use are spoons, streamers, or plugs. Troll quickly unless you are trying to catch trout, then slow it down and fish the shallows. Otherwise, troll the deep waters, especially in the summer months. Use an electronic depth finder, wire lines, and downriggers. Winter fishing usually offers ample northern pike, lake trout, yellow perch, and salmon. Most of these fish are nearer to the shoreline but trout can be caught in the deeper water.
- The water is usually frozen by January when ice fishing begins and lasts through April. Ice fishing will always produce plenty of yellow perch but it is important that anglers use extreme caution when fishing on the ice. Make sure that you have selected a spot to fish where the ice is thick enough to hold you and your equipment. Avoid blue ice at all costs. Blue ice is ice where you can see the blue water underneath. This ice is very dangerous and often very thin. If you placed a shanty on Lake George, be prepared to remove it by March 15.
- It is illegal to use smelt or alewife for bait in Lake George. It is also illegal to fish out of season or to catch nesting bass. When fishing deeper waters use a motor boat and make sure you have a life preserver for each person. Always watch your speed while boating and never litter.
