How to Make Antique Picture Frames

    • 1). Join together two simple molding profiles to create a picture frame profile. You can use any type of molding you'd like, and you can pick this material up from any craft store or any home improvement store.

    • 2). Glue the pieces together and allow them to dry overnight. In the morning, combine the two pieces to create a groove that will support the picture and glass.

    • 3). Use a table saw to make a 45-degree miter cut on the combined moldings. Also, measure and cut on the face of the groove. This will help support the picture and glass.

    • 4). Apply wood glue to the mitered end and then join the two boards together, making sure to wipe away any excess glue. Allow the piece to dry overnight.

    • 5). Spray a primer on the bare-wood frame. Make sure you use oil-based primers with oil-based paint or latex-based primer with latex paint. Gold color works well for an antique look.

    • 6). Apply two or three coats of paint once the primer has dried.

    • 7). Make an antique finish by combining paste wax and a darker-hued dry earth pigment, such as black, brown or gray paint. You can get the paste wax and the dry earth pigment from any home improvement store or craft store. Apply this mixture onto the dried frame using a slightly damp, stiff-bristled brush. To get a textured effect, dab the brush onto the frame rather than simply brushing it on.

    • 8). After the wax is applied, wipe along the inside of the frame's edges to create highlights using a slightly damp rag. This step is optional, but it does give a more finished look to the picture frame.

    • 9). Apply a clear, spray-on lacquer to protect the finish.
