How to Unhook an Old Dishwasher
- 1). Locate the water shutoff valves underneath the kitchen sink. Turn off the water that's connected to the dishwasher. If the valves are old and corroded, you may need to shut the home's main water valve off. Shut off the electricity to the dishwasher at the main breaker box, as well.
- 2). Unscrew the access panel on the bottom front of the dishwasher and remove it. Look in the left front corner of the appliance for a water supply line. Place an old towel underneath it to catch the water that will drain out. Loosen its compression fitting with an adjustable wrench and disconnect the line.
- 3). Locate the electrical junction box on the other side of the dishwasher. Unscrew the cover and remove it. Carefully pull out the wires and wire nuts. Twist the wire nuts off and disconnect the wires. You can reuse the nuts when the new dishwasher is installed.
- 4). Locate the dishwasher drain line underneath the kitchen sink. This will be a separate discharge line that's attached to the drain. Unscrew the hose clamp and move it aside. Then, remove the line from the drain piece.
- 5). Open the door of the dishwasher. Locate the 2 screws that attach the top of the appliance to the underside of the counter. Remove the screws. The dishwasher is now unhooked and ready to be removed from its cabinet.
