How to Make Tutu Costumes
- 1). Measure your waist. This will be the width measurement. Decide the length you want for your tutu. Measure from your waist, over your hip, to the point on your leg you wish your tutu to reach and multiply by two. This will be the length for your project.
- 2). Cut your ribbon based on the measured width of your project plus 10 inches. The added 10 inches will allow you to tie the ribbon when the project is finished.
You will need eight times your measured width in tulle. The material comes in different widths. Divide your original measurement by the width of the tulle you are purchasing and then multiply it by four. You will end up with multiple panels of material. Have the panels cut to your desired length. Consult with the fabric professional at your local craft or fabric outlet for assistance. - 3). Lay your ribbon on your work table or area and measure 5 inches from each end. Mark each point with your fabric marker.
- 4). Lay one panel of tulle evenly on top of another. Fold your doubled panel of tulle in half and gather a loop in the middle.
- 5). Place the loop under your ribbon just inside the first mark on the right side. Pull the remaining material through the loop, around the ribbon and tighten. Be sure the ends of your material are even.
- 6). Continue looping and knotting your doubled panels around the ribbon, side-by-side until you reach the last mark on the ribbon.
- 7). Use a hot glue gun to add sequins, miniature bows or beads to your tutu.
