How to Make a Scalloped Skirt

    • 1). Measure around your waist to find the circumference for the skirt. Add about 8 inches so that the skirt slides easily over your hips and plenty of room is allotted for the scallops. Write this measurement down for the top of the skirt. Multiply the waist circumference by 1.5, and write this measurement down for the bottom of the skirt.

    • 2). Measure from your waist to the length you would like the skirt hem and add 4 inches. For an uneven hemline, measure the longest distance for the back of the skirt. You will modify the front edge for unevenness later.

    • 3). Draw the lines for the skirt on your fabric. Draw the first measurement across the top of the fabric, measure down the length for the skirt and draw the second line for the bottom of the skirt. Connect the sides and cut out the shape.

    • 4). Draw a scalloped edge along the wide bottom of the skirt and along the two sides. Cut out the scalloped edges. Fold over ¼-inch along each scalloped edge and sew to create smooth edges for the skirt. (To create an uneven hemline, find the center of the bottom edge and cut upward on a 35-degree angle as you move toward the outer edges of the skirt.)

    • 5). Fold over 1 inch along the top of the skirt and sew a running stitch to make the waist of the skirt.

    • 6). Lay the shape on your work surface with the good side facing upward. Fold the left and right sides inward to the center. These scalloped edges are the front, center of the skirt. Overlap the scalloped edges by about 6 inches. Insert a pin to hold the top of the skirt together.

    • 7). Push the bottom of the scalloped edges outward to create an inverted “V” shape. Keep pushing until the edges at the bottom of the skirt are about 4 inches apart. The edges at the top of the skirt should still be overlapped to provide some modesty. Reduce the distance if too much is revealed.

    • 8). Sew along the top, overlapped scallops of the skirt to join the edges together.

    • 9). Flip the skirt over to find the back, center. Make a slit from the top of the skirt, down 4 inches.

    • 10

Fold over 1/4-inch along each side of the slit and sew to create smooth edges. Pin the zipper to either side of the slit, with the teeth outward, and sew to attach the zipper.
