How to Make Burp Towels From Diapers

    • 1). Lay flannel right-side up on a flat surface. Place the right side of the diaper face down on the flannel. Pin it in place. Leave an area along one edge about 3 inches long open for turning.

    • 2). Place the fabric under the presser foot of the sewing machine. Sew a 1/2-inch seam, starting at one edge of the opening for turning. Sew around the perimeter of the burp cloth, ending at the opposite side of the opening for turning. Remove pins as you come to them.

    • 3). Cut excess fabric around the edge of the burp cloth, cutting the seam to 1/4 inch; do not cut into the seam. Trim the corners diagonally. Leave about 2 inches of extra fabric at the opening.

    • 4). Turn the burp cloth right-side out. Push out the corners with a chopstick.

    • 5). Press the seams flat. Press under any excess fabric at the opening. Pin closed.

    • 6). Turn the burp cloth so the original diaper is face up. Stitch along the existing vertical seams in the diaper. Stitching here will prevent the fabric from shifting.

    • 7). Top stitch around the outside edge. Top stitching is done by sewing close to the outside edge, about 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch.

    • 8). Sew blanket binding to the short edges of the cloth, if desired.
