Start the Process As Soon As Possible
Everything takes time, often more than we expect.
In 1988 I bought my first four-track recorder and started learning to produce songs.
Very basic stuff, but I didn't wait for the perfect time to start producing music.
I got busy as soon as I could afford the recorder; I didn't wait until I had the skill to produce a song or an album before I started working on tracks.
I sold my first song in 1990 and produced my first album in 1993.
Between the five years from 1988 to 1993, all of the work came down to learn, refine, practice, follow the leaders I admired and repeat the process.
Do something! Steven Spielberg has an unadjusted gross from all of the films he's directed, to date, in excess of 8.
5 billion dollars worldwide.
Spike Lee has produced and / or directed 35 films since 1983; LL Cool J has recorded 12 albums and won two Grammies since 1985; Dr.
Cornel West has written more than 20 books.
Many, many more achievements can be mentioned but the point here is that they all started with the first one.
Where are you in the process? Are you writing your first song? Working on your first album? Not sure how to proceed? The first thing to do is this: do something! Plan and move; as you move you will discover adjustments you will need to make.
Do something, adjust and keep moving.
Often, after starting you will encounter things that never would have been seen before starting.
Do something! You can't do the second thing without doing the first thing! Personal note: I used to hate when people would point out the obvious as if I didn't get it.
However, if I "get it" but still don't do what clearly is beneficial to do, then the question remains; do I really get it? Do something! A Jay Z quote I love fits here; "I got now, I don't care who got next.
" Someday is now! Sometimes we fear making certain choices, but not choosing is still a choice and one which leads to a longer process.
I'm not suggesting moving forward blindly, only the importance of avoiding unnecessary delay.
Your career and life are waiting on the next move; do something.
