How to Rig a Planer for Fishing
- 1). Spool the heavy monofilament line, at least 700 lb test, onto the planer reel. Be careful not to kink the line.
- 2). Tie the monofilament line, also known as the planer cord, to the eyelet on the planer board using a San Diego jamb knot. To tie the knot, begin by passing the tag, loose end of the line, through the eye of the planer board and doubling back over the main line. Make at least four turns over the main line, and then thread the tag over the first loop above the eye of the planer board. Hold the coils in place and pass the tag end through the loop that was made by the last coil on the main line. Holding the tag end and the main line, pull the coils up to the eye of the planer board. Make sure the coils do not overlap as you slide them to the eye. Clip the lose end, leaving about 2 inches.
- 3). With your boat at a slow trolling speed, lower the planer over the side slowly. Let out your fishing lines, attach them to the planner cord with line release clips, and let each clip slide down the planer board cord until it reaches the position from which you want to troll.
