How to Use Your iPod

    • 1). Visit iTunes.com and click "Download iTunes," if you don't already have this program. Mac computers come with iTunes. This software facilitates your iPod's updates and media library.

    • 2). Add music to your iTunes library by clicking on "iTunes Store" in the left-hand column of the iTunes browser and searching for songs to purchase. You can also upload your own music by inserting a CD in your computer's CD ROM drive and clicking "Import CD" in the iTunes browser.

    • 3). Connect your iPod to your computer with the special Apple connector cable that came with your device. Make sure the Apple logo on the USB end of the cord (the smaller rectangle) is facing down, when you insert it into your computer's USB port. ITunes will automatically detect and sync your iPod with the media you have. Follow the prompts on screen, to complete the setup and sync.

    • 4). Unplug your iPod when the sync is complete. Put headphones in the headphone jack, or you can plug your iPod into a media playing device, such as your car radio or a speaker system. Press "Menu" at the top of the scroll wheel, to pull up the home page and view your options. Move your finger clockwise or counterclockwise around the wheel to scroll. Select options with the button in the middle of the wheel. To play or pause a song, podcast, audio book or movie, press the bottom of the wheel. To skip forward or backward, press the sides of the wheel.

    • 5). To play music, select "Music" on the home screen; then select a category, such as "Artists." Scroll to the artist you want to listen to; then select the album and song you want to listen to. To listen to songs at random, click "Shuffle" on the home screen. To create a list of songs, click the "plus" sign at the bottom right of the iTunes browser and manually drag songs from your music library to the name of the playlist. You can also select "Genius Playlist." Pick a song that your iPod will use to create a playlist with songs that fit the same genre.

    • 6). To watch videos on the iPod, click "Videos." Select the video you want to watch. Use the scroll wheel to adjust the volume, and click "Play/Pause" to start and stop the movie.

    • 7). Plug your iPod back into your computer to update its software regularly and to add or remove media files. Charge your iPod by plugging it into your computer or into a wall outlet with the appropriate Apple cord.
