Quillow Ideas
- You can simplify the folding process by enlarging the pocket and moving it. Make the pocket half the width of the quillow instead of a third of the width and move the pocket to a corner instead of centering it along the bottom edge. To fold the quillow, lay it with the pocket side down and fold the quillow in half lengthwise. Fold the quillow in half repeatedly until you make it small enough to stuff into the pillow.
- Instead of assembling two layers of fabric with a layer of quilt batting in between, use double-faced, prequilted fabric for both the quilt and the pocket. You can finish the edges with purchased double-fold bias tape or homemade bias binding.
- Try combining polar fleece with cotton fabric or use two layers of polar fleece for a cuddly quillow. Use bias-bound edges. Make the pocket with one layer of fleece and one layer of cotton for durability. If you place the cotton side down when attaching the pocket to the quillow, the durable cotton side will show on the outside of the folded quillow.

For a customized pillow block, appliqué it with the logo of a favorite sports team, a toy character, or a simple design adapted from a child's coloring book. Other appliqué ideas include cut-outs from fabrics with dogs, cats, flowers, books or any other item that reflects the person's interests. - A child can piece together a quilt block for the quillow pocket.RL Productions/Digital Vision/Getty Images
Quilters can make a pieced quilt block or use a block left over from another quilting project. A child can learn to sew by piecing a simple block -- perhaps using four squares cut from outgrown T-shirts -- for one side of the pocket on her own quillow. - Many kinds of preprinted panels lend themselves to use as a quillow pocket. Superhero themes, children's cartoon characters or plant and animal themes can harmonize with other printed fabrics. If needed, you can sew strips of colored fabric around the edges of the preprinted blocks to make them large enough for use as the pillow panel.
