Earthquake Hazards & Safety

    Tip-Overs

    • Top-heavy items such as bookcases, china cabinets and refrigerators can easily be tipped over during an earthquake. If possible, these items should all be secured to a sturdy wall. Other items to consider securing are large entertainment centers, freezers and tall dressers.

    Fire

    • A major danger during and after an earthquake is a fire resulting from ruptured utility lines. A leading cause of fires are hot water heaters, which can tip over during the earthquake. If the gas lines are broken and ignited the results can be deadly.

    Masonry

    • Brick facades, fireplaces and chimneys are major areas of concern. These items can crumble and collapse and are not easily secured prior to the event. If possible, attempt to move well clear of these items during an earthquake.

    Vehicles

    • If you are in a vehicle when the earthquake strikes, you should slowly pull off the roadway and stop. Remain in your vehicle; it will offer some protection from potential debris. Make certain not to stop beneath an overpass, bridge or any item likely to collapse.

    Indoors Vs. Outdoors

    • Indoors is safer during an earthquake, but should you find yourself outdoors, remain there. Watch for overhead items such as power lines, which could present a hazard if they were to fall. Move to an open area and remain calm. If indoors, take shelter in a doorway or under a sturdy piece of furniture.
