Bird Feeder Crafts for Kids With Bread and Peanut Butter
- For this craft, you need a slice of bread, peanut butter (either creamy or crunchy) and a plastic knife. You also need yarn or a ribbon, scissors, a straw, a plate and bird seeds and grains. Any kind of bird seeds and grains can be used -- including thistle, sunflower, cracked corn and safflower.
- Cut yarn or ribbon to the length you want the bird feeder to hang. A straw is used to punch a hole near the top of the bread so that you can thread the yarn or ribbon through. The knife is used to spread peanut butter on both sides of the bread. Both sides of the bread are then pressed onto a plate full of bird seeds, which adhere to the peanut butter.
- A variation of the peanut-butter bird feeder is to use a cookie cutter to punch a shape out of the bread. For the holidays, for example, you can use a Christmas tree, gingerbread man or snowflake cookie cutter. Likewise, you can spread peanut butter on rice cakes or any kind of bread that you can string yarn or ribbon through. Stick finely chopped dried fruits, berries and nuts to the peanut butter, in addition to the bird seeds.
- Save the scraps of bread if you use a cookie cutter for your bird feeder. These can be made into breadcrumbs and mixed with the bird seeds, or used for other purposes. Using old bread is better than using new bread because they're firmer, so spreading the peanut butter is easier. Let it sit out for a couple days or toast the bread if you don't have old, hard bread.
