How to Make Your Own Hibachi Cooktop

    • 1). Lay four bricks, wide sides laying flat, in a square on a concrete or dirt surface. There should be an open area in the center.

    • 2). Place the planter on top of the bricks so that the drain hole is over the open center. If the planter isn't steady, arrange the bricks or add more until the bottom is fully supported. This slight elevation will allow oxygen to circulate through the drain hole, which will keep the fire going.

    • 3). Add ready-to-light charcoal to the planter so that it's about one quarter full. Arrange the charcoal into a pile. Light the charcoal, and allow it to burn for about 20 minutes, until the briquettes are covered in gray ash.

    • 4). Place a wire rack on top of the planter. You can use a cooling rack designed for baking, a small grill rack or even chicken wire cut to size.

    • 5). Place food on the rack and cook it as desired.
