An Organic Treatment for the Yard

    Soil pH

    • The pH level in soil refers to the acidic or alkaline level of the soil. According to National Geographic's Green Guide, most grasses prefer a soil pH of 6.5 to 7. Test the pH with a pH tester, available at most garden supply stores. Apply lime to overly acidic soil and apply sulfur to overly alkaline soil.

    Nutrients

    • Grass requires a healthy balance of nutrients, especially nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Applying a compost tea or organic composting material helps promote the life of microorganisms. Organisms help naturally balance the nutrient content in soil.

    Water

    • According to online resource Earth Easy, it is important to water grass deeply, but not frequently. Grass needs to dry out in between watering. Water grass when the blades begin to dull in color and it doesn't bounce back immediately when walked upon. Water in the morning. Place a cup in the line of the sprinkler and water until 1 inch of water appears in the cup.
