The 9/11 Outcome - Ground Zero
Ground Zero is a term that has many different meanings, but typically speaking in the global post 9/11 environment, Ground Zero is a term that has been used to refer to the site on which the World Trade Center towers stood before the attacks on that day.
Ground Zero was in years past typically a term that was used to refer to the center of a blast zone, most notably the epicenter of the bomb blasts which leveled Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II when atomic bombs were dropped on both of those cities.
It is likely this association with the devastation caused by those attacks which cause the term now implied in any Ground Zero quiz to become associated with the former site of the World Trade Center.
Ground Zero trivia must of course address the dreadful attacks which leveled the buildings which previously stood on this spot.
On September 11th, 2001, there were two planes which after being hijacked were flown directly into the two towers of the world trade center, both which completely collapsed after the attacks.
Close to 3000 people died in that disaster, which took place on the same day another hijacked plane was flown into the Pentagon, part of the larger combined terrorist effort which had been implemented.
A fourth plane was on its way to another target, potentially the White House itself, but was brought down before it could complete its hijackers mission.
The ground zero quiz questions for many years after the attacks were concerned largely with the plans for this space the towers had once occupied.
There was a large competition among architects and architecture firms to settle on the rebuilding that would take place on this plot of land.
One of the first structures being completed is a memorial meant to honor those that were lost in the attacks.
The construction on this memorial should be completed soon.
Construction on the seven buildings which will replace the twin towers has begun, and some estimates have the construction on Tower 1 (1 World Trade Center) as being completed as early as 2013.
Any Ground Zero trivia should also mention the enormous effort that was made by the New York City Fire department in supervising the cleanup of the site after the attacks.
The people of New York were determined to rebuild, and the cleanup was finished ahead of schedule and under budget.
