Where Do You Find The American Cockroach And How Much Does This Pest Threaten Your Family"s Health?

The American cockroach lives in the sewers of every major city in the United States.
That makes this insect a particularly nasty pest.
When it leaves the sewer system, and enters our buildings, this roach carries all kinds of waste materials on its body, along with the diseases that come with that waste.
This is a large cockroach.
The adult grows up to two inches long.
Mature American roaches have wings, and fly easily from one place to another.
American roaches are tropical, and prefer living in locations that are damp and warm.
We often find large populations of this pest in steam rooms and boiler rooms.
If you live in a house you won't see this insect in your home except on very rare occasion.
Since the drain traps of most houses are always full of water this roach has few ways to enter the building.
The American cockroach does show up in apartment buildings.
The most likely areas you'll find them are in the basements, furnace rooms, and laundry rooms.
You won't likely see them on the upper floors.
Pest control technicians spot these insects often in groceries, prisons, restaurants, hospitals, and office buildings.
I serviced one hospital that sits on a crawl space.
Part of my pest control activity was to monitor that crawl space to make sure no infestations occurred.
I placed glue boards around the space to keep track of the insect types that lived there.
In that crawl space were two waste collection pools that constantly hosted crowds of American cockroaches.
I visited the crawl space a couple times each month, and maintaining control of the roaches in those pools proved was a real battle.
I baited the pools on each visit, but every time the roaches ate the bait I left behind, more roaches came along.
I managed to keep the roach numbers low, but complete elimination didn't happen.
Every other time I discovered American roaches was in large commercial buildings, mostly hospitals.
When roaches climb out of the sewer they crawl out of a dry drain.
My very first action, when I spotted an American roach, was to search for a drain in the nearby floor.
Big buildings have so many drains that many get overlooked.
Even when the pest control technician points out the drain to the people who work in the area, and lets them know they need to pour water down the drain every day, they soon forget.
Roaches crawl through dry drain traps.
If you see these insects look for a drain that appears ignored.
Pour water in it every day to keep the trap full.
Roaches don't swim so as long as the trap is full of water those bugs can't get through.
These roaches normally aren't a problem for you when you live in a house.
If you live in an apartment building these bugs can threaten your family's health with the diseases you carry.
That threat also exists to your health when you work in large commercial buildings (though to a lower level of risk).
Your defense is learn how to recognize this pest, and learn the pesticides that best fight against it.
And if you see a growing population of the American Cockroach, know how to properly treat for it.
