How to Test a Power Cord With a Continuity Tester
- 1). Unplug the power cord from the electrical receptacle.
- 2). Turn the "On/Off" switch on the appliance to the "On" position.
- 3). Squeeze the alligator clip on the tester to open the jaws. Place the jaws around one prong of the power cord and release the clip so it attaches.
- 4). Touch the tester probe to the second prong of the power cord. Observe the lights on the tester. If a green light illuminates, there is continuity. If the light does not illuminate, the path of electricity is interrupted by a short or break in one of the two internal wires.
- 5). Insert a utility knife tip into the protective covering over each of the two internal wires near the appliance. Pierce the covering with the knife tip to form a very small hole.
- 6). Pull the plug end of the power cord close to the appliance. Place the alligator clip on the left plug and the probe in the small hole on the left side of the cord to touch the wire inside. Observe the tester for illumination. This tests the left individual wire inside the power cord.
- 7). Repeat the individual wire test for the right side wire in the cord. If there is no continuity in one or both wires, the power cord needs replacing. If the test results show both wires are working in the power cord, the appliance has a short circuit and needs replacing.
