How to Weave for Kids

    • 1). Cut a large piece of cardboard out of an old box for each child. As a good starting-off point, cut the cardboard into the shape of a rectangle that is approximately 10 inches wide by 12 inches long.

    • 2). Use a ruler and pencil to mark all along one short edge of the cardboard. Start on one side and mark every 1/2 inch across, then repeat this on the other short side. Make sure to line up your marks on the sides so they are even.

    • 3). Use scissors to cut a slit along the short side for every mark that you made. Make your slits approximately 1/2 inch deep, then make them along the other short side as well.

    • 4). Pull a length of yarn off a ball or skein. Tape the end of the yarn to the center back of the cardboard to hold it in place. Bring the yarn up through the top left slit you cut in the cardboard, then down the length of the cardboard to catch it in the bottom left notch. Warp the rest of your loom by wrapping the yarn lengthwise around it, catching the yarn in each pair of slits with every wrap. Be careful not to pull too tightly or the cardboard will buckle.

    • 5). Weave on the loom. Take a new length of yarn and pass it from right to left across the warp threads, going over the first thread and under the second, repeating this pattern across the loom. When you reach the right edge, wrap all the way around that strand gently and come back in the other direction, reversing your over/under pattern. Repeat this step until you have filled the top side of the cardboard with yarn.

    • 6). Cut your warp threads across the back of the loom, giving them plenty of space to hang off the ends of your weaving. Hold the first two together and tie them in a knot close to the woven piece, then repeat across this short end of the loom and all across the other short end. Trim the warp threads to the desired length, and your weaving is complete.
