How to Knit Baskets
- 1). Cast 40 stitches onto one of the knitting needles with the yarn. Knit every stitch of every row until the piece measures 8 inches high with a ruler. Bind off each stitch to finish the square piece. Cut the yarn, draw it through the final stitch and weave in the loose ends with a tapestry needle.
- 2). Knit four more square pieces that are identical to the first knitted piece. These are the sides and bottom of the basket.
- 3). Cut a 30-inch length of yarn and thread the end through the tapestry needle. Hold two squares together with their edges lined up. Sew a whip stitch along one edge of the held squares by inserting the needle into the two layers at a time, bringing the needle back over to the front and inserting it the same way a short distance away. Do this until the entire edge is sewn.
- 4). Lay the joined squares out flat. Designate one of the two squares as the basket base. Sew one edge of each of the remaining squares onto the remaining edges of the base with a whip stitch.
- 5). Lift up two adjacent square sides so that they stand vertically. Whip stitch their side edges together. Repeat this for the remaining edges all of the sides are vertically joined.
- 6). Cast five stitches onto one of the knitting needles. Knit each stitch of each row until you have a strap that measures 8 inches in length. Make a second strap to match the first. Weave in the loose ends.
- 7). Whip stitch one strap each onto the top edge of two opposite basket sides.
