How to Play Jack O'Lantern Race Relay
- 1). Carve eight to 10 pumpkins. During the course of the race, you may break or smash one accidentally and it is always good to have backups. Draw large black lines on the center inside of each pumpkin that will be used later in the race.
- 2). Set up a large pile of leaves for the first part of the race. The first two races must sprint up to the pile of leaves and find the Jack O’Lantern that will serve as the baton for the rest of the race.
- 3). Scatter candy around a section of the yard and the second part of the race. Racers must pick up as much candy as they can and fill their pumpkins up to the hand-drawn black line before they can continue with the race.
- 4). Place two racers about 50 feet away from the candy section. These racers are the next part of the race and the Jack O’Lantern will be handed off when the racer has completed the candy section.
- 5). Set up pumpkins or other obstacles that the racer must criss-cross through. If any candy falls out of the Jack O’Lantern, they must pick it up.
- 6). Get two large pieces of cardboard and cut six coffee can-sized holes in them. Draw and color 12 pumpkin pictures that will be glued to the back side of the holes so that they are covered up. Attach a small candle to the back of one of the six pumpkins on each piece of cardboard. The racers must punch through each hole until they have found which one has the candle.
- 7). Have an adult light each candle carefully. Then have the racers go to the end of the race with the lit candle and place it inside of a Jack O’Lantern to end the race. If the candle goes out, they must go back and have it re-lit again.
- 8). Award the winners with candy and all of the participants as well. Add in more obstacles and make adjustments as needed.
