How to Make Batman Capes
- 1). Measure the person for whom you are making the cape from the shoulders to the ankles. This measurement will be the length of the cape. Measure beginning at the chest, wrap the measuring tape around the back and end at the chest on the other side. Double this measurement for the width of the cape. If you are making multiple capes, measure each person in this way and write each measurement down.
- 2). Determine how much fabric you will need using the measurements you wrote down. If your measurements for one cape are 22 inches by 24 inches and your measurements for another are 20 inches by 20 inches then you will need a piece of fabric about 42 inches by 44 inches; but purchase a few inches extra to give yourself room for error.
- 3). Measure your fabric to match the measurements you took earlier and cut it accordingly.
- 4). Lay the fabric on a table or other flat surface and decide which end will be the bottom of the cape. Since Batman's cape has a jagged bottom that resembles bat wings, you will need to alter the bottom of your fabric to achieve this look. Place a large bowl at the bottom corner of the cape so that a half circle of the bowl covers the bottom of the cape. Trace the edge of the half circle with chalk. Align the bowl right next to the first circle in the same fashion and trace it. Do this until the entire bottom edge is filled with half circles.
- 5). Cut out the half circles for a jagged bat-wing look.
- 6). Refer to the original chest-to-chest measurement before you doubled it. This will be the width of the top of the cape. Cut the original chest-to-chest measurement in half and measure that many inches in from each side of the top of the cape and make a mark. For example, if your original chest-to-chest measurement was 12 inches, you will have a 24-inch-wide piece of fabric. You will then measure 6 inches in from each side of the top of the cape and make a mark with the chalk at each 6-inch point.
- 7). Use your measuring tape and chalk to draw a straight diagonal line from the chalk mark you just made on the left side of the cape to the corner of the bottom left of the cape. Draw a straight diagonal line from the chalk mark on the right side of the cape to the corner of the bottom right of the cape.
- 8). Cut along the two diagonal lines to create a traditional cape shape.
- 9). Sew a Velcro square to each inside corner of the top of the cape following the instructions on the Velcro package.
