Senior Living
- Seniors, on the whole, can set their own schedules and spend their time as they see fit. They have time to devote to long-delayed hobbies, travel or recreation. Some choose to start second careers. Many of those begin to work with non-profit and charitable organizations. Pursuit of education, either in a formal setting or through independent study, research and reading are the goals of many who had to choose work and family over going to school.
- Many erroneously believe that living as seniors is boring and purposeless, and thus depressing and sad. Further, there are those who think that as people age, they are no longer productive and become unemployable. Today's retirees aim to prove that those views of senior life bear no resemblance to reality.
- Seniors can choose to live by themselves, with their families, in senior retirement communities or in groups such as senior apartments. One very popular lifestyle among more affluent seniors is to become snow birds, those who have a residence in northern states and then spend winters in warmer climates, somewhere in the south.
- In the United States, several states are considered to be the best places to live for seniors. Since these include Florida, Arizona, California and Texas, it seems seniors prefer warmer climates and some favor living near the coast. That being said, there are numerous cities outside of these sunny states that offer great opportunities for seniors. Unlikely spots like Hendersonville, North Carolina, and Natchitoches, Louisiana, have been included as best places to retire.
- There are some very real concerns for seniors. They must guard against isolation by staying active and involved. Paying attention to preventive health care and treatment of illness or disease can lead to a longer, more active lifestyle as senior grow older. Regular exercise and a nutritious diet can promote better health and well-being. Activities that exercise the mind are extremely important to maintaining sharp, focused thinking and a sense of well-being. The warmth and companionship of a pet can also play a big role in the life of seniors.
