How to Install a Ceiling Fan in a Sunroom
- 1). Turn off the electrical power to the sunroom by turning off the appropriate breaker. Make certain everyone in the home knows to leave the breaker turned off until the project is completed.
- 2). Remove an existing light fixture in the sunroom so that only a junction box with three wires--black, white and green (bare)--remains. If there is no light fixture in the room, a swag wiring kit will be your best and least-invasive wiring option.
- 3). Install the ceiling fan. Fan models will differ slightly, so follow the manufacturer's directions for proper installation. If the sunroom ceiling is slanted, install a spacer rod to allow the fan to hang lower to accommodate for the slanted ceiling but also remain level.
- 4). Connect the wires. The green or bare wire is the ground, the white wire is neutral and the black wire carries the voltage. Use the appropriate-size wire nut to contain the wires. The wire nut needs to be securely in place with no bare wire showing. Tuck all of the wiring into the junction box away from the fan's moving parts.
- 5). Turn the power back on and test the fan. Be certain the fan rotates smoothly in both directions and does not vibrate, wobble or make odd noises. The fan is now ready to keep the air properly circulated in your sunroom to provide a comfortable environment for you and your family.
