- 1). Pour 1 gallon of hot water into a cleaning bucket, along with 1/2 cup of dish detergent and 1 cup of oxygen bleach. The dish detergent will cut through the residue, while oxygen bleach will clean the soot effectively without risking brick discoloration during cleaning.
- 2). Place old towels on the floor of the fireplace to catch soot as it is removed.
- 3). Dip a scrub brush into the bucket of cleaning solution and begin scrubbing the bricks. Continue dipping and scrubbing until the entire interior brick surface has been cleaned.
- 4). Discard the bucket of sooty water and refill the bucket with clean warm water. Rinse the brush under running water.
- 5). Dip the scrub brush into the fresh water and go over the brick once more. This will rinse away any remaining residue and cleaning solution.
