- 1). Measure the length of the trim boards that you need. Mark the area where the boards will join on each trim piece.
- 2). Cut the ends of the trim pieces with a miter saw. Cut each end at a 45-degree angle. Cut one piece opposite of the other piece, so that the angled edges align to make one solid piece.
- 3). Nail the trim pieces to the wall as normal using small finishing nails. Leave a small, one-eighth of an inch gap between the two trim pieces to allow for expansion of the wood and the shifting of the walls during normal weather changes over the seasons and years.
