Some Geography of the Island of Puerto Rico

The Island of Puerto Rico is known to be around ninety miles wide in the east west direction and also thirty miles just between the north and south coast.
The island is the territory belonging to the United States and if the island became a state then Puerto Rico would then be the forty ninth biggest state which is more bigger than Rhode Island and Delaware.
The tropical coastal area of this island is very flat but yet most of the land is mountains.
One of the tallest mountains there is located in the center of the island, known as Cerro De Punta and is known to be 4,389 in height.
Also eight percent if the islands land is arable for some agriculture.
Heavy rain, droughts and hurricanes are known natural major hazards.
It is estimated to be about four million people living on the island, which could make this island the 23rd most populous state.
Puerto Rico's capital San Juan, is located towards the northern part of the island.
The population on the island is very dense with about 1,100 people for each square mile.
The primary language there is Spanish even though most of the people speak English, roughly about one quarter of them are known to be bilingual.
The population is known to have a mixture of African, Spanish, some indigenous heritage.
Most of the people there are known to be Roman catholic and the literacy is around %90.
It was believed that Christopher Columbus discovered the island and then claimed it for Spain.
Puerto Rico was not settled until 1508 when Ponce DE Leon found a small town just near to the present day San Juan.
The island still remains a Spanish colony for over four centuries up until the United States had defeated Spain during the Spanish American war in 1898.
During the middle of the twentieth century the island was very well known to be one of the poorest island in all of the Caribbean.
In was during the year of 1948 that the U.
S.
Government started operating bootstrap which then infused millions of money into the island and made the economy one of the wealthiest.
The People there are known to be citizens of the United States and have been since 1917.
During the year of 1967 up to 1998 all the citizens in the island voted on whether the island should become a state, remain a common wealth or just become an independent country.
Should independence is chosen by the people from the island in the future then the U.
S.
Will help the country with a decade long transition period.
However, as it is now Puerto Rico still remains the territory of the U.
S.
known as Comonwealth of Puerto Rico.
