Spanish Castles from the Medieval Epoch
The Medieval era endured conflict in the years between 500 and 1500 AD. During this period the region experienced dreadful skirmish between nations and warlords. As a result, fortresses were put up to host the royalties and their next of kin and at the same time serve as throttleholds against potential adversaries. The constructors allocated the duty to build castles were treated with utmost respect since their effort was determinant to the capability of the castles to withstand enemy attacks and guarantee the continuity of the kingdom in question. Nearly all Spanish castles were built of stone.

The Castle was constructed during the reign of King Philip the second and it took more than 30 years to put the finishing touches to the enormous architectural tour de force by Juan de Herrera, a world renowned architect. In the present day the castle holds a library, museum and a crypt for the Kings of the Kingdom of Spain. The castle is of utmost significance and this has seen it being granted international protection by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO.
