How to Remodel Bathroom Floor & Tile

    • 1). Measure the bathroom space. Figure out any fixtures, such as a sink vanity or tub, that you need to replace. Plan to seat a new commode on top of new flooring. Draw the bathroom footprint layout with precise measurements. Figure the square footage of floor tiles you will need to purchase.

    • 2). Draw a tile pattern for flooring and walls. Use graph paper to design the pattern for all areas. Plan to install a floor section 6 feet by 9 feet made of gold 9-inch square tiles, for example. Add a 2-foot border of 12-inch square black tiles around this as one option. Turn some of the tiles on a diamond pattern in your drawings to see if this works. Select grout that will match tiles or contrast with tile colors.

    • 3). Remove old materials and install the tile. Take out a sink vanity or toilet, for instance. Remove old flooring from the room. Install new tile flooring tile under a sink vanity or where the commode will sit. Place tiles to the edge of a shower-tub unit, depending on the design. Add tile work to wall areas, too.

    • 4). Grout carefully. Use white grout with black tiles, for example. Have the retail store tint white grout to a pink color so it will match pink flowers in wallpaper. Use white tiles with pink grout and one wall of white and pink wallpaper as one option. Design the grout work for every tile project with as much detailing as the tile work. Allow grout to dry 24 hours before seating new fixtures or cabinets on top of it.

    • 5). Install baseboards to cover small gaps around the perimeter of the room. Caulk all appropriate areas. Install wood or metal trim along a boarder to hide gaps that may occur.
