How to Join Threaded Carbon Steel Fittings

    • 1). Roll up a rag and insert it into both ends of the threaded, carbon steel fitting. Turn the rag several times to remove any dirt from the fitting's interior female threads. Wipe around the male threads on the end of the pipes that will connect to the fitting.

    • 2). Pull a few inches of sealing tape from the roll and wrap it around the threads on the end of both pipes. Follow the direction of the threads, overlapping the tape by half its width. Pull on the tape slightly while wrapping to ensure that it fits snugly against the thread. Continue until all of the threads on the two pipes are covered with tape. Alternatively, brush threading compound onto all parts of the pipe threads.

    • 3). Screw the fitting by hand onto one taped end. Place one pipe wrench around the pipe and a second wrench around the fitting. Hold the the pipe stationary and turn the fitting clockwise to tighten it to the pipe end.

    • 4). Screw the second pipe's taped end into the other end of the fitting. Tighten the pipe to the fitting by placing a wrench around the pipe and turning it clockwise.
