• I think that Ben was on the island before the Dharma Initiative came to island. He told Jack that he'd lived there all his life, but as far as we know, the Dharma Initiative started on the island in the 70s. Ben has got to be older than mid thirties. Perhaps Ben's group is the reason the Dharma group didn't last.
