How to Make a Quilted Effect on Fondant

    • 1). Place the package of fondant in a medium-size bowl. Dip the toothpick into the food coloring gel and mix it into the fondant. Continue adding more of the food coloring gel until you reach the hue you want.

    • 2). Sprinkle a little bit of cornstarch on a clean, flat surface and place the fondant on top. Roll out the fondant with a regular rolling pin until it is about 1/8-inch thick. If you make the fondant thicker, it will take longer to dry.

    • 3). Cut the fondant into the final shape with a sharp paring knife or a rotary fondant cutter.

    • 4). Lay a ruler on top of the fondant and draw a line with the embosser tool 1-inch from the left side of the fondant shape for the first vertical line. Measure over 1 inch, lay the ruler across the fondant and draw another line with the embosser tool. Repeat all the way across the fondant.

    • 5). Draw the horizontal lines through the fondant every inch to complete the quilted fondant.

    • 6). If you prefer a diamond quilt effect, start at the lower left-hand corner and emboss a diagonal line to the upper right-hand corner. Space the lines parallel to the first one every inch across the fondant. Then, starting at the lower right-hand corner, draw a diagonal line to the upper left-hand corner. Space lines parallel to the this one every inch across the fondant until it is covered in diamond-shaped quilting.

    • 7). Let the fondant sit until it feels dry to the touch.

    • 8). Spread a thin coating of icing on the top of the cake. Slide a spatula gently underneath the fondant quilt to lift it from the counter, pick it up with your hands and place it on the cake. Press gently to smooth it in place.
