How To Make a Silk Flower Cake

    Design a silk flower cake

    • 1). Select silk flowers for your silk flower cake. Choose two or three mid-size flowers such as daisies or carnations and one or two smaller flowers such as pincushions or cornflowers. Select different shades of one color like violet, purple and lavender or complimentary colors such as red, yellow and orange.

    • 2). Plan your silk flower cake design. Layer one type of flower around the cake, followed by another type or color until you reach the top. It should only take two or three layers depending on your flower sizes. You can also alternate the type or color of flower in one layer. Plan to fill in the top of the cake with smaller flowers. There is no wrong way to decorate your cake.

    • 3). Consider the size of your silk flower cake. To make a cake with a six-inch diameter measuring four inches high, you will need approximately 50 to 70 silk flowers. The exact number of flowers depends on the type and size of flowers you choose.

    • 1). Glue four Styrofoam disks together one on top of the other to make your cake. Allow the glue to dry, ensuring the foam disks are held together securely. Styrofoam disks tend to range in size from four to 12 inches in diameter and are typically one inch in height. To make a small silk flower cake, use four foam disks measuring four to six inches in diameter.

    • 2). Separate your flower bushes into single flowers leaving a one- to two-inch stem on each flower. You can purchase singe stem flowers, but it is generally more cost effective to purchase flower bushes with multiple flowers per bush. Use wire cutters to cut the stems.

    • 3). Place glue on the stem and the base of the flower. Press the flower into the Styrofoam disk. Hold the flower in place for two to three seconds. Start with your bottom layer. Continue this process around the cake. Once your first layer is complete, move on to the next layer. Fill in the top of the cake with your chosen flowers.

    • 4). Set your silk flower cake in a cake box or on a pedestal cake stand for a snappy presentation.
