How to Sign Guest Books
- 1). Look at the guest book immediately when you arrive at the event. This will give you a chance to see the format of the guest book and see how others have signed the book. If it is a traditional guest book, simply write your name and address and a few words such as "Good luck" or "My sympathy" (depending on the occasion). However, if the guest book asks for a lengthier message, take a moment to think before writing.
- 2). Enter the event and begin to mingle. If you are at a wedding, the guest book is usually transferred to the reception so that guests can sign it there as well. If that is the case, you have plenty of time to think about your message. If you are at a funeral or wake, greet the family and mingle with other attendees. As you talk to others, think about the message. Gain inspiration from pictures and conversations.
- 3). Find a private place where you can concentrate for a few moments, whether it be in your car, the coat room, or the bathroom stall. Right down a few thoughts on a pad of paper or write out your entire message word for word. This will give you a chance to make changes without making mistakes in the guest book.
- 4). Revisit the guest book and write your message. Don't be intimidated by people standing in line behind you, and try to avoid conversations while you are writing, so as to prevent distractions and mistakes.
