Renting the Wedding Tux
While there are many attire options for groomsmen, the dapper tuxedo is the traditional choice for formal weddings. The silhouette originated in Europe and the U.S. in the late 1800s as an alternative to the long tailcoat. Since then, the formal evening suit has been the style of choice for fancy black tie affairs, including weddings.
Here is a handy guide to helping you get your tux rented hassle free.
Who Wears a Tux?
Considered the most formal of male garments, the groom, his attendants and the ring bearer are typically decked out in a full tuxedo. The ushers also usually wear tuxedos although suits are acceptable. Immediate male family members, including grandfathers, fathers and brothers may also wear a tux since they are in the wedding pictures.
Do I Get to Choose What I Wear?
Although each man in the wedding party is responsible for paying their tux fees, the bride and groom typically select the style and colors. The tradition of all the groomsmen wearing the same outfit is as old as the custom of groomsmen itself. The original intention was for attendants to dress just like the groom in order to confuse any evil spirits who wanted to curse the marriage. Modern couples often choose a slightly different cut, color or accessories for the groom so that he stands out from the group.
Getting a Group Discount
Discount group rates and coupons for tuxedo rentals are widely available at bridal fairs, in wedding magazines and on retailer websites.
Many major retailers offer a free tux for the groom with five paid rentals.
How Much Does a Tux Rental Cost?
The cost of the tux varies widely depending on your region, the style you choose and the designer. On average, tux rentals run between $100 and $200 each. You pay a small deposit at the first appointment roughly two to three months before the wedding. The remaining balance is due at the final fitting, which is usually two weeks prior. Avoid paying additional fees by ordering it on time, returning it by the deadline and keeping it in good condition. Rush order fees start at $20.
Renting Tux Accessories
Along with your tux, you will also rent all the accessories you need, including shoes, tie, cufflinks, vest, pocket square, cummerbund or suspenders. While cummerbunds were popular in the 1980s, vests are the preferred choice these days. “They look better when gentlemen remove their tuxedo jackets during the reception,” notes the Men’s Wearhouse website.
Do I Need a Fitting?
To ensure a proper fit, most rental stores do not allow you to measure yourself, so you do need to go in for a fitting. The groom and groomsmen normally go together to guarantee the right items are ordered. If several people live far away, choose a national retailer that offers multiple locations or have them get measured by a local tailor and send in their measurements. The groom should set up the first shopping appointment two to three months in advance, and the final fitting occurs two weeks before the wedding. The ring bearer should have their first fitting four weeks before and the final fitting two weeks before.
When Do I Pick Up and Return the Rental?
Your tuxedo is ready for pick up usually two days before the event so that you have time to fix any problems. Do not wait until the day of the wedding or you might get stuck wearing trousers that end above your ankles (true story!). Rentals must be returned by the next business day unless you have made arrangements for an extended rental.
