Transportation Alternatives in the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands draw many tourists every year, and also have a large number of dedicated locals. Though the islands themselves are quite small, with Grand Cayman being the largest, transportation methods other than walking are still a necessity for most individuals. There are many makes and models of Cayman cars available for both rent and purchase in the islands, but driving is not as eco-friendly as many would like. If you'd like to get around quickly and efficiently without the use of a vehicle in Cayman, the following are some great transportation alternatives.

Scooters

The popularity of both scooters and motorcycles is rising in Cayman, and using a scooter to get around is fast and easy, and allows you to truly enjoy the great climate of the islands. Scooters and other motorized bikes save money on gasoline, and can be purchased from a variety of car dealers in Cayman, such as Automotive Art, which is located at 480 Shedden Road, and Cayman Custom Cycles, which is located at 74 Portland Road. Tourists can also rent scooters in Grand Cayman, and this is a cost-efficient option at approximately $50.00 per day. The price includes a visitor's driving permit and insurance, as well as helmet rental, as all riders in the islands are legally required to wear one. Scooters are the most popular form of transportation in Grand Cayman next to automobiles, due to the island's size and busier roads. You can rent scooters at Cayman Auto Rentals, which is located at 135 North Church Street.

Public Transportation

George Town has a fairly developed public transportation system, with 7 bus routes that run to and from George Town's bus terminal, which is located in the centre of the city. While there are designated waiting areas for buses in Grand Cayman, flagging a bus down from the side of the road is an acceptable practice here. Buses are able to carry up to 25 people, and the cost to ride is between 2 and 3 Cayman Islands dollars, depending upon how far you are traveling. Whether you can use public transportation to get you where you need to go in Grand Cayman depends upon where you are living or staying, as areas such as South Sound Road do not have bus service. Using the bus as your primary mode of transportation is best for those living or staying inside the city of George Town.

Bicycles

Riding a bicycle is the most eco-friendly alternative to driving a car that is available in the islands. The majority of the resorts in Cayman provide bicycles for their guests to use, and bicycles do not require gasoline or insurance, and also do not emit harmful fumes. If you wish to use a bicycle in Cayman, taking the utmost care is required as many drivers are said to not fully respect bicyclists on the road. While there are not many lanes designated for bicycling in the islands on busy roads, using a bicycle is ideal for roads that are more remote and less busy, but still paved. Bicycles can be purchased at the Kirk Home Centre and Uncle Bill's, and wearing a helmet while riding is recommended. Bicycle owners are encouraged to register their bike with the local police.

There are many great alternatives to renting and purchasing Cayman cars, and opting to utilize a bicycle, scooter or public transportation is better for the environment and more economical. There are many resources available for learning how to ride scooters and motor bikes, as well as for renting scooters and bicycles in the islands. While public transportation only services some areas of Grand Cayman, it is ideal for individuals living or staying in George Town.
