How to Use Baking Soda to Wash Laundry
- 1). Remove odors with baking soda.
Kill odors with baking soda. If clothing smells like gasoline, skunk, deer, perspiration, mothballs, whatever, pre-soak the items in the washing machine with about half a cup of baking soda. Use it to rinse a bathing suit to remove chlorine, too. - 2). Remove stains with baking soda.
Use baking soda as a stain pre-treatment. Make a paste with a little water for ring-around-the-collar or baby bibs. Sprinkle it dry on a fresh fruit or wine stain on linens to soak up the stain. Baking soda also removes tar and crayon from fabrics. - 3). Use less detergent with baking soda.
Add about half a cup of baking soda to a load of laundry along with a small amount of laundry detergent. It takes less detergent this way, and the clothing is cleaner with less perfume odor from the detergent. - 4). Use baking soda as an odor-free fabric softener.
Use baking soda in the rinse cycle instead of fabric softener if your family has sensitive skin. It softens the fabric without the fabric softener perfume, too.
Baking soda to wash laundry works for pre-treatment, in the wash cycle, and in the rinse cycle. It makes clothing whiter, removes stains and odors, and is less harmful to sensitive skin than many of the laundry products on the market.
