How to Use Acupuncture to Regulate Absent Periods
- 1). Schedule an appointment with your gynecologist to discuss your menstrual issues and to be examined. It is possible that she will find a medical reason for your amenorrhea that can be treated easily before you begin acupuncture.
- 2). Find a licensed acupuncturist that specializes in women's health and has experience treating menstrual problems. Find a specialist in your area through Acufinder (see Resources).
- 3). Sit for a consultation with your chosen acupuncture provider so that she can examine you and determine the best course of action to treat your amenorrhea. Bring your medical history with you or be able to tell her how your condition originated. This will help the acupuncturist know which meridians of your body to treat with the fine needles used in acupuncture.
- 4). Dress in loose clothing for your appointments so that the provider can have easy access to the areas of your body she will need to treat, including the abdominal region where your kidneys and liver reside. According to the American Academy of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM), amenorrhea occurs when there is a blockage or imbalance in the kidney or liver qi (energy) (see Resources).
- 5). Have patience when it comes to treating your amenorrhea with alternative medicine. Not everyone benefits from acupuncture, and the number of sessions required will vary from person to person. If you are feeling frustrated by a lack of progress, discuss your options with your acupuncturist.
