How to Make a Child's Bat Costume
- 1). Assemble the bat wings. Cut the umbrella away from the frame to create the bat wings. If there are any holes, you can cover them with tape and use a black permanent marker to color the tape to match the umbrella. Outline the lines of the umbrella with puff paint to accent it.
- 2). Fold the circle of in half when the paint is dried. Pin the wings to the back of the shirt, down the middle of the back. It may take some time to get the wings adjusted, so make sure you have plenty of safety pins on hand so that you can make sure they don’t move once you have them in place. Tape a couple of hair ties to the wingtips so that your child can wear them around his wrists.
- 3). Cut two bat ears out of the black felt. Black felt is best to use because it is a stiff material and this will help them to stay up in place. There are no exact measurements that you need to use because it all depends on the size of the child that will be wearing the costume. Bend two black pipe cleaners with ends going in opposite directions and attach them to the ears.
- 4). Outline the ears with more puff paint. You can attach the ears with tape to the costume so that they can be removed after Halloween and the clothing can be reused. If you are not wearing a hooded shirt, you can attach the ears to a headband that can easily slip on and off the head.
- 5). Add black face paint to complete the costume. Test a small area with makeup in case of any allergies to the face paint. This will give just a little more splash to the costume. You can find a Halloween makeup kit available in the seasonal section of your local retail store.
